GUM TREATMENT

Gums are vital parts of oral environment. Infection in Gums can leads to destruction of jaw bone and eventual tooth loss.

DEEP CLEANING OF GUMS (SCALING & ROOT PLANNING)

It is a non-surgical process by which local irritants such as plaque and calculus are removed from tooth and tooth root surface to reduce mild to moderate type of Gum disease (Periodontal Disease).
The primary objective of scaling and root planning is elimination of inflammation provoking elements.

FLAP SURGERY AND BONE GRAFTING

Flap surgery is a type of gum procedure in which the gums are separated from the teeth and folded back temporarily. This allows a dentist to reach the root of the tooth and the bone.

Moderate to severe type of periodontal disease can not be cured with antibiotics or scaling and root planning procedure, gum flap surgery is the recommended treatment modality for such patients. Flap surgery cleans the root surface and infected, avascular bone, it repairs bone damage caused by gum disease.

Bone grafting procedures are done to restore jaw bone surrounding tooth to its previous form following tooth loss, gum disease or trauma. Most of the teeth affected with periodontal disease present different types of bony defects around them. Bone grafting plays an important role in saving such teeth by filling the defects with suitable bone grafting material. Material to be grafted can be obtained from same individual or from a different species.

SPLINTING OF TEETH

Splinting therapy may be applied with bonded external appliances, intracoronal appliances or indirect cast restorations to connect multiple teeth with the goal of improving tooth stability. Unstable teeth may be caused by a lack of support from tooth loss.

Indications of Splinting -

  • Mobility of teeth that is increasing or that impairs patient comfort.
  • Migration or unwanted shifting of teeth.
  • Needs of prosthetic treatment.

SINUS LIFT PROCEDURE

When the back teeth in the upper jaw are missing, the sinus cavity becomes larger due to deterioration of natural bone over a period of time. A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation or sinus elevation, is a bone-augmentation procedure for patients who have insufficient natural bone in this area for dental implant placement. In an effort to increase the volume of bone in jaw for implant placement, the bone graft is placed and heals before the implant can be placed. The healing period vary, depending on the type of bone graft used.

CROWN LENGTHENING PROCEDURE(CLP)

It is the surgical procedure performed by a dentist to expose a greater amount of tooth structure by resection of gums and reshaping of bone level for the purpose of restoring the tooth prosthetically. Nowdays, laser is most commonly used equipment for crown lengthening procedure.

Indications of crown lengthening procedure-

  • Root decay or fractured tooth.
  • Unequal contour of gums in asetheic zone.
  • Short heighted clinical tooth/teeth.
  • Smile designing.

RECONTOURING OF GUMS

This procedure is also termed as Gingivoplasty. It is a small plastic surgery performed to obtain an idealistic proportion of gums to the teeth (Gingival Zenith) by reshaping of gums, in an order to get superior aesthetic result while smiling.

LASER BACTERIAL REDUCTION (LBR)

It is a painless procedure used for eradication of bacterial infection in diseased gums. Laser energy specifically targets pigmented bacteria and inflamed gums. In most of the cases, LBR can avoid surgical procedure required for the treatment of spongy, red, suppuractive gums.

LASER DEPIGMENTATION OF GUMS

It is a painless procedure performed onto the gums by laser. Dark melanin pigmentation is removed to achieve normal pink color of gums without affecting the health of the tissue. Laser gum depigmentation is the preferred option by most of the candidates over surgical blade depigmentation.

LASER OPERCULECTOMY

Partially erupted tooth often harbours bacteria beneath gums and gives pain. Laser is used to expose the tooth by removal of soft tissue covering the tooth.

LOCALISED INTRAGUM MEDICAMENTS

It is found that mouth rinsing and irrigation have got some limitations in treating intragum bacterial infection. Recently, advances in delivery technology like localised intragum drug delivery have resulted in sustained release of drug or medicament at effective concentration levels for sufficient time with minimal or no side effects. Commonly used intragum medicaments are -

  • Resorbable tetracycline containing fibres.
  • Metronidazole 25% dental gel.
  • Biodegradable chlorhexidine periochip.
